How Did You Awake Today? - A Poem About Gratitude

GRATITUDE

I awake amid the sounds of crickets
Anticipated,
but unexpected in melodic rhythm
Thank you for the wake-up call.

My eyes open
And eyelids autonomously blink
Check.
My phalanges wiggle, and
Knees and neck bend with ease,
Check.
My diaphragm bounces
Evidence that my life on Earth
continues for another day
Check!
Thank you for more time to play.

Out of my window
Darkness
Split with horizontal lines,
abstract shapes
and brilliant colors that divide
reveal what we call ‘sunrise’
Thank you for the Creative inspiration.

In the span of minutes
I’m hygiene ready
Showered, brushed teeth,
Combed hair
And gone down stairs for eats
So, there’s a roof overhead
Water running
Electricity streaming
Dresser drawers with
underwear and socks
A closet with clothes and shoes
Linen in cabinets
Plates and silverware in drawers
A stove ready to be used
And a fridge with food
Thank you for the “little things.”

Each day I awake,
I can rush through in attitude
mindless of self-generated
drama and feuds.
Conscious, I can appreciate,
draw more good
and enjoy the life I create.

Choice is mine.
And, Gratitude is good
when understood.
